12/8/2015 0 Comments Smart Text EditorIn summer of 2014 I interned at The New York Times R&D Lab. I was very fortunate to get the chance to work with greatest minds working on future of journalism.
Michael Dewar and Matt Bogie threw out some problems at me. At first I was baffled at the kind of problems that I was working on. It was a totally open ended problem and given that I had no prior experience with NLP I was clueless for few days on the approach. Mike was able to see me struggling and gave me full support in enhancing my NLP and Computer Science knowledge. I was asked to build a system that can identify personal nouns from the text and find out a corresponding entry in NYTimes taxonomy. I started building systems based off what Google might have underneath its search engine. Eventually I started bringing in concepts from NLP to furnish the tagging system further. At the end of my internship I was able to package all of my algorithms into APIs thus forming a microservices platform. This set of talking APIs were then integrated to form a text editor. Below is just the screen shot of the text editor. Left hand side is the actual editor while right hand side is the visual representation of processes happening in the backend. The project is currently in display at the lab. Demo can also be viewed online here: http://nytlabs.com/projects/editor.html
